I was born in Southend-on-Sea in 1935. I went to Earls Hall Primary, and was duly evacuated to Whaley Bridge. at the age of 5. After the war I went to Southend High School for Boys and from there to Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where I read English, with Freddy Bateson and Al Alvarez as tutors. Then a B.Litt. thesis on Browning’s poetry, and a Dip Ed. In 1959 I went to the University of Marburg/Lahn (West Germany) as Lektor in English Language for two years: National Service had effectively ended. During this time I married and my first child, Nicholas, was born. After some months painting in Greece I moved to St Ives for a year, (my daughter Bo was born there), and then continued teaching at Hornsey College of Art followed by the (then) North East London Polytechnic, now University of East London, which included helping to plan, set up and run a new kind of degree course in Communication Design.
I wrote and illustrated Ferocious the Puppydragon (Picture Puffin Original, 1971), and have written several other children’s books (so far unpublished). I contributed to a number of books on education, (including The Hornsey Affair, Penguin Education Special, 1969). Since 1991 I’ve lived on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, painting and writing. Below is a summary of work.
